CHEMICAL TINTING OF HAFNIUM AND ZIRCONIUM CARBIDES FOR METALLOGRAPHIC EXAMINATION,

Abstract

An etchant is described that imparts color to the surface of hafnium and to zirconium carbide metallographic specimens. These colors not only provide a sharp delineation of individual grains, but also define the boundaries of eutectic colonies that contain both graphite and carbide. For a given specimen, similar orientations of grains may be inferred from similar coloration. (Author)
