AN EXPERIMENTAL ON-LINE INFORMATION RETRIEVAL SYSTEM,

Abstract

Message editing procedures and the use of two command languages are described that are being incorporated into an experimental on-line information retrieval system. The system employs a PDP-8 for generating, proofreading, and editing messages, and an IBM 7040 for information retrieval processing. The symbolic retrieval language permits three commands in the search mode: retrieve, combine, and display. The second language Easy English, requires only that requests be formulated in a specified syntactic form. Users have the option to translate Easy English requests to symbolic language during a search. (Author)
