WAKE MEASUREMENTS BEHAND A CONE SUSPENDED MAGNETICALLY IN A MACH NUMBER 4.3 STREAM.

Abstract

The paper presents the results of pitot pressure surveys recorded in the near wake of a slender cone in a Mach number 4.3 stream. The cone was suspended magnetically to insure a support interference-free wake. Most of the data were taken at a Reynolds number of 40,600, based upon free stream conditions and cone base diameter. At this Reynolds number, the near wake was laminar. The results indicate that large velocity defects and high temperatures are likely to persist in the viscous wake many diameters downstream. The wake was extremely sensitive to cone inclination; noticeable differences in the wake structure were present at angles of attack as small as .4 degrees. The wake, including the recirculation region appeared to bifurcate. Pitot pressure data is presented for angles of attack of 1 1/2, 3, and 4 1/2 degrees. A critical assessment of the effects of angle of attack cannot be made until more data are availabe; but a rough estimate shows that properties in the bifurcated wake can differ from the axisymmetric wake by as much as 25 percent for a cone inclination of 1 1/2 degrees.
