ADAPTIVE CONTROLS: A SURVEY AND A SIMULATION STUDY,

Abstract

The outline of this report will follow, approximately, the functional evolution of control systems. This functional evolution will be traced through the following steps: (a) Linear controls, i.e., controls that perform linear operations upon the input signal. The transformed input signal then becomes the output signal. (b) Nonlinear controls, i.e., controls that perform nonlinear operations upon the input signal. (c) Preprogrammed modification of the control system parameters that operate on the input signal to produce the desired output. (d) Learning systems that modify their own control parameters as a result of experience. (e) Self-organizing systems that do not operate on the input signals but rather evaluate them and generate output signals based on this evaluation. (Author)
