RESPONSE OF BEAN PLANTS TO BETA RADIATION.

Abstract

The response of bean plants (phaseolus vulgaris) to beta radiation was observed over a range of absorbed dose and for both contact and beta bath geometries. Contact beta sources were applied to the leaves of 20-day-old bean plants, and contaminated cylinders were placed around plants that were just emerging from the soil on the eighth day after planting. A range of radiation dose was obtained by adjusting the source strength and the time of the exposure, or both. The observed effects ranged from an apparent growth stimulation at lower absorbed dose to sterility at the higher absorbed doses. Insufficient data were collected to evaluate the dependence of the response on plant age and dose rate; but the observed responses and dose data show that total beta doses of 100,000 rads to leaves and 2,000 rads to whole plants produced sterility.
