PREVENTION OF PINKISH-BROWN DISCOLORATION IN DRYING MAPLE SAPWOOD.
Abstract
Hard maple lumber producers have difficulty in consistently kiln drying the wood to a light natural color. To obtain the very whitest color specified for some products, they believe it is necessary to start with winter-cut, air-dried material. The experiment showed that either white or discolored lumber could be produced during the kiln drying of air-dried or summer-cut green 5/4 hard maple by adjusting kiln conditions. A low-temperature, moderate relative humidity kiln schedule produced the white stock. Various operational malfunctions that cause unwanted high humidity conditions are discussed, as are precautions in the use of the moderate humidity schedule. (Author)
