OPERATION OF A PRIMARY ANTIMALARIAL SCREEN.

Abstract

The objectives of this program are to test new compounds in a primary screen for effectiveness against blood-induced Plasmodium berghei and to develop methods for use in screening against sporozoite-induced infections in mice and chicks. A total of 2554 compounds were screened in the blood-induced mouse test system. A colony of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes was established for infecting chicks with Plasmodium gallinaceum and a protocol was developed for a test system for the sporozoite-induced infection. Considerable effort has been spent in obtaining reproducible cyclical passage of P. berghei yoelii sporozoites from Anopheles stephensi mosquitoes to mice. (Author)
