MULTILAYER DAMPING TREATMENTS FOR SKIN-STRINGER STRUCTURES.

Abstract

A general theory is developed to analyze the damping of an equivalent free layer applied to a continuous skin-stringer structure. A damping parameter, the ratio of energy dissipated in the treatment to the maximum total strain energy in the structure, is derived and theoretical curves presented for 36 configurations as a function of treatment length and number of layers. Experimental values of the damping parameter are also presented for one configuration as a function of the number of layers and experimental values compared to the theoretical predictions. The theoretical predictions are quite good where adequate theoretical normal mode shapes are available. (Author)
