RELATIVISTICALLY INTERSTREAMING BOUNDED PLASMA INTERACTIONS,

Abstract

The characteristic equation has been formulated and some of its solutions are presented in the form of dispersion diagrams for a circular cylindrical waveguide loaded with several concentric regions of plasma interstreaming at relativistic velocities along the guide axis; the axis is aligned with an externally applied 'dc' magnetic field. The small signal approximation was used in the derivation of the characteristic equation, but the quasi-static approximation was not used, and relativistic terms were retained. The plasma components display no thermal effects except through a collision frequency representing collisions in which all of the particle's 'ac' momentum is lost. The dispersion diagrams presented, which were obtained through use of a CDC 6600 computer, represent a variety of electron beam interactions with an electron-ion plasma for modes with no angular variation; some stationary plasma data is also presented. The interactions of an electron beam's fast and slow space charge and cyclotron modes with the first and second plasma cyclotron and space charge modes were calculated for a variety of combinations of beam density, radial size, and velocity.
