APPLICATION OF TERRAIN DESCRIPTIVE TECHNIQUES TO FORT KNOX, KENTUCKY,

Abstract

In order to maintain a mobile and versatile military force, new and improved techniques for the observation, measurement and quantitative description of geographical areas must be developed. Many regions exist where unique geographical and environmental conditions require special military operational considerations. Defining the area of proposed military operations will many times dictate military considerations such as mobility, effective fire power, communications efficiency and logistic requirements. It was the purpose of this investigation to examine certain terrain descriptive techniques for validity and practicability for quantitatively describing the geographical area of Fort Knox, Kentucky, and environs. Because of time and fund limitations and certain inherent difficulties encountered with the descriptive system, the maps accompanying this report were restricted to the surface geometry components of the Fort Knox quadrangle.
