SCISSIONS OF SULFUR-HALOGEN AND SULFUR-SULFUR BONDS.
Abstract
A series of investigations was carried out relating to the synthesis of sulfenyl chlorides, including 3-chloroformylpropane sulfenyl chloride, 2,4-dinitrobenzene sulfenyl chloride (by a much simpler route), and pentachlorobenzene sulfenyl chloride. The utilization of gamma-thiobutyrolactone in the synthesis of the first-mentioned sulfenyl chloride represents a convenient route to this bi-functional sulfenyl chloride. A number of free-radical reactions of sulfenyl chlorides, involving homolytic scission of the sulfur-halogen bond, were also carried out. These reactions open up a wide area of study which appears worth further investigation. (Author)
