PLASTIC DESIGN OF MULTI-STORY FRAMES - UNBRACED FRAMES.

Abstract

This report presents a plastic design method for unbraced multi-story frames. An unbraced frame for the purpose of this report is one which has no bracing in the plane of loading such as X-type bracing, shear walls or cladding. Theory is referred to briefly but the main emphasis of this report is on practical application. For this reason, detailed explanations, derivations, and experimental verifications of design equations, are not included. They can be found in the references listed at the end of the paper. Only rigid frames designed in carbon and/or high-strength structural steels are considered. Floor systems are assumed to be simply supported and perpendicular to the frame. Design examples are given to aid the reader in understanding the procedure. Calculations are done on a tabular form to suggest a possible means of organization for manual computations. (Author)
