KERR MAGNETO-OPTIC STUDIES OF THE DOMAIN PATTERNS IN NICKEL IRON TAPES,

Abstract

The models presently used to predict the low field, slow speed flux reversal phenonena in grain oriented 50% nickel 50% iron tapes have been confirmed indirectly from the voltage induced in a winding on a core. Domain observations using the Kerr magneto-optic effect have been made on the surfaces of the 50% Ni-Fe tape samples. The surface domain patterns differ depending on the sample preparation, which is described in detail. When the tape samples were annealed after electrochemical polishing the patterns observed were in close agreement with previously postulated models for flux reversal in the 50% Ni-Fe tapes. Data on the domain wall motion coercive forces is presented. A stress gradient between the top and bottom surfaces appeared after electrochemical polishing. The resulting domain patterns were complex. The correlation between the net magnetization of the sample and the surface domain patterns under stress was poor. The Kerr magneto-optic domain patterns on the surface of the tape sample could be used as a very sensitive indication of the presence of a stress on the surface. (Author)
