AIRCRAFT CANNONS,

Abstract

The author discusses the effectiveness of the machine gun as an aerial weapon in close combat. Among the advantages of airborne machine guns are an effective range of 1000 meters, continuous fire, and high rate of fire. The author touches on the relative merits of the 37-, 30-, 23-, and 20-mm aerial machine guns. A comparison was made between the weight of the 23-mm machine gun and the 37-mm machine gun, as well as the respective rates of fire and the number of rounds of ammunition that can be carried on board. The author concludes that automatic fire control will release the pilot or gunner for other tasks and will improve the percentage of direct hits, that aerial machine guns must be compact and lightweight, that muzzle velocities should be improved, thus increasing range and percentage of hits, and that higher rates of fire must be achieved.
