DEPENDENCE OF OPTICAL ANISOTROPY OF MACROMOLECULES ON THE PROPERTIES OF A SOLVENT (ZAVISIMOST OPTICHESKOI ANIZOTROPII MAKROMOLEKUL OT SVOISTV RASTVORITELYA),

Abstract

The segmental anisotropy (alpha1 - alpha2) of polyvinyl butyrate (I), polyvinyl propionate (II), polyvinyl butyral (III), and polychloroprene (IV) was calculated on the basis of dynamic birefringence and viscosity determined at 21C on solutions of I--IV in solvents with a value of n approximately equal to that of the polymer. Both aromatic and nonaromatic solvents were used. The experimental results are explained by assuming that an anisotropy increment due to orientation of molecules of the solvent with respect to segments of the polymer chain is added to the true segmental anisotropy of the polymer.
