WEAKENING OF A NARROW PARALLEL BEAM OF LIGHT IN A TURBID MEDIUM (OSLABLENIE UZKOGO PARALLELNOGO PUCHKA SVETA V MUTOI SREDE),

Abstract

The dependence of illumination by an incident parallel light beam on the optical depth was investigated for model scattering media in which the extinction coefficient epsilon and the photon surviving probability Lambda were varied. It was shown that in slightly turbid media at small depths the light extinction obeys the Bouguer law due to the negligible role of the scattered radiation in the total energy balance. However in the media with a larger epsilon at any thicknesses Bouguer law is not fulfilled. The illumination increases with increasing epsilon for beams of finite width. The important role of Lambda was shown for the extinction law of a parallel beam at light in a turbid medium. (Author)
