THE ROLE OF ORNITHOFAUNA IN THE NATURAL FOCI OF TICK-BORNE ENCEPHALITIS,

Abstract

Between 1954 and 1956 a virological exploration was made of wild birds and of wood ticks taken from them in the districts of Tomsk. 1,159 wild birds, belonging to 6 orders and including 39 species, were examined. A total of 4,700 white mice, 15 rabbits, and 10 guinea pigs were used in the research on the birds and ticks, and in studying the properties of the isolated strains. Nine strains of the virus of tick-borne encephalitis were isolated, six from the birds and three from the larvae and nymphs found on the birds. (Author)
