AN APPLICATION OF TERNARY LOGIC TO LOGIC SEQUENCING,

Abstract

The purpose of this report is to investigate the feasibility of using ternary logic and ternary logic elements to design an arithmetic control that is comparable in function to the Arithmetic Control of the ILLIAC II and to discuss some of the results of this construction. First, the fundamental theory of ternary algebra is presented, function representation and minimization discussed, and a ternary design technique developed. A basic description of the ILLIAC's Arithmetic Control is given for purposes of understanding design criteria and of establishing a motivation for using ternary logic. Finally the logical design of Basic Logic Blocks is discussed, and several problems and suggestions for future work are considered. (Author)
