RELATIONSHIP OF HEMAGGLUTINOGENS AND LEUKOTOXIC ANTIBODIES IN THE SERUM OF RHESUS MONKEYS IMMUNIZED WITH RHESUS LEUKOCYTES.
Abstract
Isoantisera induced in the rhesus monkey by immunization with rhesus leukocyte preparations showed a multiplicity of reactivities when tested for hemagglutination, leukoagglutination, and leukotoxicity. Relationship of the hemagglutinogens and leukotoxic antibodies was determined by absorption of isoantisera with the erythrocytes from immunizing-leukocyte donor animals. Resultant changes in the pattern of leukotoxic activity against panels of cells ranged from no effect, to highly selective, complete and partial removal, to an enhancement of leukotoxicity. Absorption analysis indicated the existence of leukotoxic antibodies that react with homologous antigens on the erythrocyte--i.e., leukotoxic hemagglutinins. Isoimmune anti-lymphocyte serum (ALS) was studied for its effectiveness in mitigating the secondary disease syndrome. The pretesting of both bone marrow donor and recipient with iso-ALS of specific cytotoxicity is necessary for the effective use of such an agent. There appeared to be no relationship between isohemagglutinin responses and blood group incompatibility as defined by heteroimmune blood typing reagents. (Author)
