NOVEL STRUCTURES AS PRECURSORS FOR ORGANIC IONS OF UNUSUAL STABILITY.

Abstract

Various synthetic approaches to preparing novel aromatic molecules containing a positively charged atom within the cavity of the pi-cloud have been explored. A method of synthesizing the previously unknown (2.2) metacyclophane-1-enes was devised. These molecules exhibit an interesting, and reversible, photoisomerization. Also, such (2.2) metacyclophane-1-enes undergo dehydrogenation and provide a new route to trans-15,16-dialkyldihydropyrenes. (Author)
