PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATION OF BACKSCATTERING FROM RESONANT SIZE OBJECTS IN THE PRESENCE OF GROUND CLUTTER,

Abstract

Preliminary results are presented of an experimental study aimed at investigating techniques for detection of metallic objects of resonant size located on or near the ground. For the study, a short pulse L-band backscatter measurement system was chosen, and such system, capable of generating r-f pulses as short as 5 ns at 1.060 GHz, was constructed. The pulse transmission characteristics for various antennas were investigated and of these a monopole appeared to introduce minimum pulse distortion. Pulses 10 ns long were used, and the backscattering amplitudes were measured from half-wave resonant length wires as a function of their height above ground, and also as a function of the wire separation, when there were two of them. Judging from the results obtained thus far, backscatter amplitude measurements alone, however short the transmitted pulse may be, do not seem to provide sufficient information for recognition of metallic targets of resonant size. Phase and Fourier spectrum measurements should also be included. (Author)
