THE CO-MOVEMENT OF H(+) AND NA(+) AT THE ONSET OF PHOTOSYNTHESIS IN ULVA, IN RELATION TO OTHER IONS,
Abstract
A rapid extrusion of sodium from Ulva, induced by light, also occurs with other cations as evidenced by 86Rb and 85Sr tracer studies; anion movement (36Cl, 35S-sulfate and 14C-acetate) is not affected by light. The sodium flux has a pH optimum of about pH 8, and has a time constant similar to that for co-movement of H(+) and HCO3(-) concerned in photosynthesis. Substitution experiments indicate that only HCO3(-) is necessary for the short term light induced ion movements. (Author)
