APPLICATION OF RADIOGRAPHY TO THE STUDY OF SMALL-SCALE FOOTING TESTS IN CLAY.

Abstract

The examination of failure surfaces and deformation patterns in clay has heretofore met with little success. Through the use of radiography, it was possible to classify the failure mechanism for the two footing tests under investigation as punching shear for the dynamic and local shear for the static test. The results of this investigation showed that it was feasible to use thin-slice radiography to delineate failure surfaces and deformation patterns in small-scale footing tests in clay. (Author)
