GROUND ROUGHNESS EFFECTS IN FALLOUT RADIATION FIELDS - PROBLEMS OF ANALYSIS OF MEASUREMENTS,

Abstract

The 'ground roughness' effects on the gamma radiation field from fallout are calculated and described on the basis of the uniform burial model. The dose rate vs. height curves are estimated with an empirical function for the buildup factor. Graphs showing the effect of finite angular resolution of the measuring instrument and the observation of the angular distribution are presented. The emphasis of the discussion is on an improved understanding of the meaning of 'ground roughness' and of the errors common in the measurement of that quantity. Methods of presentation and analysis of experimental data are discussed. (Author)
