DEVELOPMENT OF TRANSMISSOMETER CALIBRATION TECHNIQUES AND DEVICES, PHASE I.

Abstract

Two side-by-side 250-ft. baseline transmissometers are used to isolate calibration techniques that may be useful under all visibility conditions. Current calibration procedures are limited to application in visibilities of 5 miles or more. A review of these procedures is presented. Testing anticipates extending some calibration techniques to visibilities less than 5 miles. Preventive maintenance procedures are discussed which may be utilized to minimize transmissometer outages. Inspection of Weather Bureau Electronic and Maintenance Summaries shows that timely replacement of the projector lamps will reduce lamp failures to near zero. Interim results of testing show that the practice of aging CE-75 phototubes should not be overlooked.
