MULTIVARIATE ANALYSIS OF COMBAT.

Abstract

This paper evaluates the use of multivariate statistical techniques to analyze combat, and in particular to quantify the relation between firepower and maneuver. Several methods are employed, all of which focus on the differences between success and failure in a military engagement. The methods combine mean values, data plots and correlation coefficients with factor analysis and discriminant functions. In order to evaluate them, these methods are applied to data from 37 United States division-sized engagements during World War 2 and the Korean War, and from 12 German tank battles in World War 2. Possible changes in data gathering efforts and the historical program of the Army are discussed. From the data, measurements are developed to assess the relation between firepower and maneuver and of their impact on success or failure in the engagements examined. (Author)
