THE RELATION OF THE SACCHAROLYTIC PROPERTIES OF LISTERIA TO THE PH OF THE MEDIUM,

Abstract

In the preparation of liquid media containing Andrade's indicator it is necessary to establish the pH of the peptone water at 6.6-7.0 prior to the addition of the indicator, and at 7.0-7.4 after the addition of the indicator. The differences of opinion of the separate authors, concerning the number of carbohydrates fermentable and the times of fermentation by Listeria, are, together with a possible variability of the strains, related to the method of preparation and the quality of the nutrient media.
