AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF THE MODE OF EMPLACEMENT OF LAVA FLOWS.
Abstract
The mechanism of lava flow emplacement was studied using a model material whose physical properties permitted similar but slightly distorted scaling of an acidic magma. The material was extruded at a single temperature and approximately constant rate down slopes of known dip. The length as a function of time, final dimensions, and typical cross sections of the models were measured for different slopes and volumes. The models suggest explanations for pressure ridges and levees observed on natural flows. Quantitative results, reproducibility, and model distortion are presented and discussed. (Author)
