SOME MATHEMATICS OF INFORMATION STORAGE AND RETRIEVAL

Abstract

The report explains some of the mathematical techniques currently being used and some which are being considered for solving a problem of information storage and retrieval. Basically two problem characterizations are discussed. The first is a statistical description and the other is a vector space characterization. Specifically, we have neglected the interesting area of linguistic analysis which is sometimes used as the basis for information retrieval. Several examples, comments and suggestions are made regarding the use of the various techniques.
