A STUDY OF INTERACTIONS BETWEEN ELECTRIC ARCS AND GAS FLOWS.

Abstract

The report covers experimental and theoretical investigations of the interactions between an arc and a gas flow in a constrictor. The effects of vortex injections were analyzed and measured. Stability criteria were developed for the radiation dominated arc. Several distinct modes of operation were observed, and their operating characteristics were tentatively determined. The introduction of gas dynamic and/or magnetohydrodynamic turbulence to reduce radiation was identified as an important ingredient in high enthalpy heaters. An analysis of the radiation dominated arc correlates the nitrogen data well. (Author)
