INFLUENCE OF INSTRUCTIONAL SET ON HABITUATION OF ORIENTING RESPONSES AS MEASURED BY GALVANIC SKIN RESPONSE, PULSE VOLUME, AND BLOOD VOLUME.
Abstract
Instructional set was utilized to produce different arousal levels in two groups, the lower one of which replicated the conditions of an experiment testing and confirming 5 hypotheses derived from Sokolov's 'neuronal model' of habituation of the orienting response. A tone series of standard stimuli (SS) and test stiumli (TS) was delivered through earphones and galvanic skin response (GSR), pulse volume (PV), and blood volume (BV) were measured. Only one of the hypotheses of the replication was confirmed. The higher arousal group tended to reverse the predicted direction of the hypotheses. Results were compatible with intensity-magnitude relations and stimulus generalization gradient and not congruent with the 'neuronal model.' (Author)
