ABSORPTION AND FLUORESCENCE SPECTRA AND CRYSTAL FIELD PARAMETERS OF TRIPLY IONIZED TERBIUM IN CALCIUM TUNGSTATE,

Abstract

A study was made of the absorption and fluorescence spectra of Tb(3+) in single crystals of CaWO4 to establish the energy level (7)F ground term of Tb(3+) and determine the crystal field parameters for CaWO4. The crystals were used at temperatures between about 4.2 and 77K where emissions were observed from the (5)D3 and (5)D4 multiplets to the (7)FJ states and where absorption transitions from the ground (7)F6 multiplet to the (7)F0, (7)F1, (7)F2, and (7)F3 multiplets were recorded. The (7)F energy levels were fitted using an effective Hamiltonian for the ground term where the states were described by Russell-Saunders wave functions. This calculation takes into account the complete J-mixing of the states within the ground term by the crystal field and is equivalent to determining the effects of the spin-orbit interaction to second-order.
