The Problem of Pattern Recognition (O Probleme Opoznaniya Konfiguratsii)
Abstract
The problem of pattern recognition is examined along two directions. The first direction consists of a group of problems related to constructing reading devices consisting of comparators and a large memory. A characteristic of reading devices is the inability to change their mode of action during the operating process. This leads to a study of the second direction of the problem of pattern recognition which concerns the question of constructing learning recognition devices. Learning recognition devices are automatic machines with feedback, that is, devices which compare the responses for the input patterns with the responses for an external device ('an amplifier'). The problem of pattern recognition is also reported in terms of discrete automatic machines, that is, devices having a finite number of inputs, a finite number of outputs and a finite number of internal conditions. The automatic machine obtains information about the external medium by its sensing elements, which (in the case of living organisms they are called receptors) serve as inputs to the automatic machine. The external medium is reflected in the automatic machine through the conditions of its inputs.
