APPLICATION OF THE BHATNAGAR-GROSS-KROOK MODEL--A CAUTIONARY EXAMPLE,

Abstract

The nearly free molecular drag of a highly cooled blunt body in a hypersonic stream is predicted using the method of Knudsen iteration. The simple BGK model is used for the collisions. The predicted drag coefficient differs substantially from that reported previously. The main cause of this disagreement is thought to be a lack of validity of the simple BGK model for a highly nonequilibrium flow. (Author)
