THE EFFECT OF CHARGE TRANSPORT ON THE DISINTEGRATION OF LIQUID JETS.

Abstract

Disintegration processes occurring with charged liquid jets of several different fluids were examined. A range of fluid and electrical properties were spanned. High-speed photographic techniques were used to determine the effect of charging on disintegration of the jet, the size distribution of the drops formed, and the velocities of the drops. Electrification alters the disintegration pattern of the jet by enhancing the instabilities, as well as introducing new instabilities in many cases. The size distribution of the drops formed from the electrified jets is significantly altered in the direction of lower mean sizes. Drop velocities increase and are changed in direction, as a result of both electrical repulsion forces and the reduction in size. (Author)
