RESEARCH DIRECTED TOWARD THE OBSERVATION AND INTERPRETATION OF SOLAR PHENOMENA.

Abstract

The first section describes research at Harvard in two major categories: (1) Analyses of solar observations made at Sacramento Peak and elsewhere of the green coronal line, and of sunspots. (2) Theoretical studies in magnetohydrodynamics, leading toward development of a model for sunspots, and in atomic theory, on the intensities of spectral lines for improved interpretation of the solar spectrum. The second section reviews the operation at Sacramento Peak of the optical solar patrols of flares in the light of Ha, of sunspots in white light, and of the coronal emission lines by spectrograph and cinematograph; it also notes a photographic observation of a flare in white light.
