DESIGN DATA OF GAS-LUBRICATED SPIN-AXIS BEARINGS FOR GYROSCOPES.

Abstract

This document contains analytically derived design data for four types of gas lubricated self-acting bearings which are commonly used for the suspension of the spin axis of gyroscopes. Information prepared includes geometrical parameters of the overall bearing package as well as surface features for the optimum design of each of the four bearing types. Performance data given are stiffness, friction, critical mass for stability and frequency of instability. The design data is supplemented by theoretical background and illustrative examples.
