TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS AND DRIVER CHARACTERISTICS: A STATISTICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL STUDY.

Abstract

This report consists of two parts. In the first part an attempt is made to discover, by the use of statistical means, whether it is possible to infer from the traffic accident rates of the drivers that the individual differences in these rates are influenced by personal factors or so-called accident proneness. Connected with this are the problems as to what requirements should be placed on the external conditions, the period of exposure and the classification of accidents in order that the constancy of the individual differences, i.e. the reliability of the accidents incurred by an individual driver, should be sufficient. The second part is a test psychological investigation in which an attempt was made to discover the psychological factors which give rise to accident proneness and to find how general they are and what are their relationship to the other data indicative of the qualifications of a driver.
