DEVELOPMENT OF AN OCEAN DATA STATION TELEMETERING BUOY.

Abstract

The report describes recent activities and results in a program to develop a general-purpose ocean data station buoy and associated shore-based mobile data facilities to be used to acquire oceanographic and meteorological data in scientific experiments at sea. The work, started in 1959 under Contract Nonr-3062(00), is under the direction of the Deputy Director, Ocean Science and Technology Group, Office of Naval Research, United States Navy. The report period is from December 1966 through March 1968. Ocean Data Station buoys ALPHA and BRAVO are being prepared for participation in the Scripps Institution of Oceanography North Pacific Experiment, scheduled to begin in August 1968. The experiment is being conducted to study the causes of large-scale, persistent anomalies in surface temperature in the region bounded by 30 degrees and 50 degrees parallels of latitude and the 160 degrees East and 135 degrees West meridians.
