SMOOTHING EFFECT OF THE TURBULENCE TERM IN OBJECTIVE ANALYSIS AND NUMERICAL PREDICTION,

Abstract

The elimination of small-scale perturbations from observed or predicted height fields forms one of the difficult steps in the numerical prediction of the upper-air flow patterns. Several different methods are compared, and a new method introduced whereby the desired smoothing may be achieved by introducing the turbulence term without requiring the preparation of separate smoothing programs. The inclusion of the turbulence term is particularly effective in filtering small-scale perturbations. (Author)
