VARIABLES AFFECTING CULTURAL MEANINGS ASSESSED BY ASSOCIATIVE GROUP ANALYSIS,

Abstract

The Associative Group Analysis (AGA) technique, in respect to its main objective, to empirically assess word meanings, is validated in this report. AGA aims to identify the relationships determined by meaning among key concepts, images, and symbols specific to a group, in terms of local and culturally characteristic interpretations. Such studies are relevant to the effectiveness of intercultural communication, psychological operations, and any tasks dealing with overseas populations. This report finds that the information provided by the AGA method is little affected by other than content-determined variables, and that it thus genuinely reflects the characteristic understandings of the specific culture groups and target audiences tested.
