PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OF FILTER/COALESCER ELEMENTS WITH VARIOUS MILITARY FUELS.

Abstract

The report covers the performance evaluation of military, standard-dimension, filter/coalescer elements when removing water and solids contaminants from various military fuels. The report concludes that: (1) MoGas and No. 2 diesel fuel currently being supplied to military users contain detergent and dispersant-type additives which adversely affect the water- and solids-removal performance of a modern filter/separator; (2) After the MoGas and No. 2 diesel fuel are filtered through fuller's earth or clay filters, the elements met the specification requirements described in the report; (3) With AvGas, the element performance in removing 3% water and red iron oxide was marginal but not considered unsatisfactory.
