ORBIT SYNTHESIS.

Abstract

This paper illustrates many of the techniques, tools, and methods of approach used in the process of selecting satellite orbital characteristics to satisfy mission objectives and constraints. Such a selection involves achieving a balance between desired or required satellite functions and the geometrical and dynamical properties of satellite motion. A hypothetical mission is defined to provide a convenient framework to exhibit the interplay of the elements involved in orbit synthesis. The postulated general characteristics of the satellite mission together with constraints such as range safety and booster limitations are combined to establish a domain of acceptable orbital parameters. Factors such as ground illumination, coverage pattern, altitude decay histories, perigee rotation, and sustenance maneuver characteristics are then examined in detail to synthesize desirable nominal orbits which lie within the acceptable domain. Operational sequences, including follow-the-sun perigee motion and sustenance maneuver histories, are postulated and then blended with launch season determinations into two mission profiles.
