MULTI-MAGNON ABSORPTION IN MNF2.1. THE FAR INFRARED SPECTRUM.

Abstract

The far infrared absorption spectrum of a thin crystal of MnF2 at 4.2K and 80K was observed in the region 40/cm to 360/cm. The spectrum consists of many sharp lines superimposed on a broad background of phonon origin. The sharp lines are interpreted as being due to processes in which multi-magnons are created, sometimes accompanied by either the creation or absorption of standing elastic waves. At 4.2K, up to 6 magnons are created simultaneously. At 80K, multi-magnons are created in the ordered surface layers of the crystal with energies nearly identical to those of the 4.2K magnons. Weak bulk multi-magnons are also observed at 80K with appropriate lower energies. (Author)
