INTERPERSONAL APPROACH-AVOIDANCE AND FEAR OF FAILURE.
Abstract
One-hundred and four Bucknell University undergraduate males were designated high and low fear of failure (FF) according to the Hostile Press (HP) scoring system of the TAT (Birney, Burdick and Teevan, 1964). An affiliation Preference Questionnaire and Work Condition Preference Questionnaire were administered to Ss during the rest period of an achievement situation. There was no difference between the affiliation preference of high and low FF Ss. The results showed that high FF Ss preferred to work in isolation to a greater extent than low FF Ss and that low FF Ss preferred to work in a communal setting to a greater extent than high FF Ss. The results were discussed in terms of the relationship between the social contingencies of different work conditions and high FF S's fear of failing in the eyes of others. (Author)
