ESTABLISHING THE TECHNIQUES OF PRESSURE WORKING OF NEW METALS AND ALLOYS (USTANOVLENIE TEKHNOLOGII OBRABOTKI DAVLENIEM NOVYKH METALLOV I SPLAVOV),
Abstract
Before the techniques of the hot and cold working of new metals and alloys can be developed, it is necessary to conduct research in: (a) the force parameters (distribution of unit pressures, torque, friction forces, deformation of unit pressures, torque, friction forces, deformation resistance and its dependence on temperature and rate of deformation and on phase transformations); (b) plasticity and its dependence on temperature, deformation rate, structural transformations and stressed state; (c) kinematics of change in shape. The results of research of this kind also reveal that what should be the optimal conditions of the prior heat treatment and rolling of the metals and alloys involved, as illustrated by investigations of flame-furnace heat treatment and rolling temperatures of various types of serial and experimental alpha-, (alpha + beta)- and beta-Ti alloys, carried out with the aid of specially developed testing devices at the Institute of Metallurgy im. A. A. Baykov and other organizations, which also are experimenting with the hot and cold working (forging and rolling) of new high-temperature, high-strength and corrosion-resistant Ti alloys. As another example, investigation of the plasticity of bars pressed and sintered from tungsten powder by various techniques (different conditions of pressing and sintering, different temperatures, pressures, time intervals, protective atmospheres, as well as different granulometric and chemical compositions of the powder) has led to the development of a process for manufacturing 30-50 microns thick vacuum-sintered tungsten-powder foil and strips.
