NON-CONTACT HEAD DEVELOPMENT.

Abstract

An experimental tape transport (loop machine) and the design of noncontact heads are described in detail. A few basic aspects of foil bearings and the application to longitudinal noncontact heads are discussed briefly. A short description is given of a 100 hour wear test to select two brands of instrumentation tape to be used in this program. The power ratio of signal to wideband noise of four tape speeds is plotted versus head-to-tape separation. (Author)
