THE POSSIBILITY OF THE EXPERIMENTAL TRANSFORMATION OF VARIOLA MAJOR VIRUS INTO VACCINIA VIRUS
Abstract
The two strains of variola major virus multiplied well during the process of 50 successive passages in cell cultures of human and bovine embryo skin, exerting a cytopathological effect on cells. Changes in the properties of the variola virus did not take place as a result of lengthy cultivation under the stated conditions: Similar to the initial condition, both viral strains remained non-cytopathological for cell cultures of chick embryos and in the chorio-allantois of developing chick embryos and in a HEp-1 cell culture caused morphological changes which were sharply different from those caused by the cowpox and vaccinia viruses.
