SOVIET PARTICLE ACCELERATORS: ANALYTICAL REVIEW.

Abstract

The report reviews Soviet work on particle accelerators that includes research, development, construction and operation of the devices and associated equipment. The material is based exclusively on Soviet open-source publications dated from 1962 through 1967. The treatment employed is keyed to the Soviet organizations, mainly research institutes, that carry on the particle accelerator work, and to the various specialized teams or groups that can be identified within each such organization. Particular attention is paid to associate the personnel with specific subjects, functions and the leadership structure. The report ends with a number of appendices that provide a statistical summary of the entire material. This includes a ready reference list of all the Soviet accelerators described or tabulated in the text, and several tables presenting a three-dimensional distribution of the source documents used in the report: by subject, time, and facility. The tables thus reflect annual changes in publication activity of each organization within the principal areas of interest. The report is also provided with an alphabetic index of all personnel, indicating their affiliation. (Author)
