ROCKET AND SATELLITE INSTRUMENTATION FOR IONOSPHERIC MEASUREMENTS.

Abstract

The report summarizes work performed under contract No. AF19(628)-4995 involving development and utilization of rocket and satellite probes for ionospheric measurements. In this research, particular emphasis has been given to development of RF probe techniques for electron density measurements and simultaneous utilization of these and many other instruments in coordinated measurements of special ionospheric conditions such as aurora, auroral absorption, etc. Other supporting instruments utilized include Langmuir probes, particle and X-ray counters and spectrometers, Lyman-alpha detectors, scintillators, Gerdien condensers, and photometers. Brief discussions of the rocket and satellite systems and the findings from the various launchings are presented with heavy reference to previous reports, papers, and publications. (Author)
